ExoMars Rover: engineering for the red planet

Monday 9 March: 6:00pm - 7:00pm

Babbage Lecture Theatre, (Through the Pembroke Archway), New Museums Site Downing Street, CB2 3RS

ExoMars is Europe’s first Rover mission to Mars – a mission in search of life, past or present, to answer one of humankind’s oldest questions: are we alone in the Universe? Abbie Hutty, Platform Delivery Manager for the rover, discusses the mission’s aims and objectives, what some of the major challenges and design drivers of a mission to Mars are, and how the team are engineering solutions to meet those challenges.

Abbie was inspired to pursue a career in science and engineering by the Beagle 2 Mars lander programme, and landed her dream job working on her very own Mars mission at just 25. She spent 8 years working on the Rosalind Franklin Rover in a variety of roles, firstly as the lead structures engineer for the Rover Vehicle, coordinating a team of design specialists, and responsible for producing a structure design meeting all of the functionality required of such a mission. Following successful delivery of the first full structure build, Abbie took on the role of Platform Delivery Manager for the Rover, responsible for all of the rover’s subsystems being delivered, tested and integrated together to create the finished Rover. Latterly she has been planning the final test and verification campaign for the flight Rover, the final activities undertaken by Airbus prior to the scheduled launch in 2020.

Now one of the country’s most experienced specialists in Mars exploration, she is passionate about science communication and outreach, striving to inspire the next generation of scientists and engineers by highlighting the exciting work going on today in the Space Industry and broader engineering profession. Abbie has won many awards and accolades in the course of her career including the IMechE’s Young Member of the Year, IET’s Young Woman Engineer of the Year, and Royal Academy of Engineering Rising Star. A chartered engineer through the IMechE, and a council member for the IET, in 2016 Abbie was elected Fellow of the Institution of Mechanical Engineers, the youngest individual in the Institution’s 169 year history to achieve this status. In 2019 Abbie was named as one of the BA100; a list of 100 “makers of Modern Britain” compiled by British Airways who represent the best values of modern Britain.
