LIMITED TICKETS AVAILABLE ON THE DOOR - Newcomers in the Table of Chemical Elements

Monday 11 March: 5:00pm - 6:00pm

St Catharine's College, McGrath Centre, Trumpington Street, CB2 1RL

The recently-discovered super-heavy elements with atomic number 114-118 completed the 7th row of the Periodic Table of Dimitri Mendeleev. Professor Yuri Oganessian, after whom the very last of these elements was named, discusses how these new elements were synthesised in the laboratory, and exactly what he and his colleagues saw during their discovery.

He will also speculate on future work, including how many chemical elements might yet be made, and how the Periodic Table will cope with these new elements as their nuclear charge increases.
