Currently, the only way to treat HIV is with antiretroviral therapy that suppresses the virus but cannot eradicate it from the body. Leading a team of UK-based researchers, Professor Ravi Gupta, Department of Medicine, achieved a milestone this year by successfully eliminating the HIV virus from a patient through bone-marrow transplant. This breakthrough could help experts who are looking for new ways to tackle HIV and achieve a cure.
