Once upon a food system

Tuesday 10 March: 7:15pm - 9:00pm

Student Services Centre, Lecture Room A, New Museums Site Bene't Street, CB2 3PT

How can our food tackle global challenges like the climate crisis, biodiversity loss and world hunger? Join Global Food Security’s Maia Elliott and bestselling author and BBC presenter Dr Adam Rutherford for a unique scientific storytelling event, where five scientists are challenged not only to inform food system change, but to inspire it.

Speakers:
Maia Elliott is the science writer and public engagement lead for Global Food Security, a UK Research and Innovation programme that aims to put people and the planet at the heart of our food system. Last year Maia launched the Speak Up for Food Security competition and presented ‘The Problem with Food’ at Cheltenham Science Festival. This year, she will be introducing five new scientific storytellers, who will be sharing their stories to compete for the programme’s prestigious GFS Speak Up Award.

Jan Blake is one of Europe’s leading storytellers, performing worldwide for over thirty years and specialising in stories from Africa and the Caribbean. She has been the resident storyteller at Hay Festival, curated Shakespeare’s Stories with the Royal Shakespeare Company and the Shakespeare Birthplace Trust, and toured the award-winning The Old Woman, the Buffalo, and the Lion of Manding. At this event, Jan will be demonstrating the power of storytelling to effect change by recounting an ancient folk tale with a food security twist.

Judges:
Dr Adam Rutherford is a science writer and broadcaster. He studied genetics at University College London and has written and presented many award-winning series and programmes for the BBC, including the flagship weekly Radio 4 programme INSIDE SCIENCE and THE CURIOUS CASES OF RUTHERFORD & FRY with Dr Hannah Fry. He is the author of CREATION, which was shortlisted for the Wellcome Trust Prize, A BRIEF HISTORY OF EVERYONE WHO EVER LIVED, THE BOOK OF HUMANS and HOW TO ARGUE WITH A RACIST.

Dr Riaz Bhunnoo is Director of UK Research and Innovation’s Global Food Security programme, where he provides strategic leadership to drive forward cross-stakeholder, interdisciplinary activities together with the UK public funders of food security research. Riaz has previously worked on the Gates Foundation’s Grand Challenge Explorations and is a strong advocate of a systems approach to tackle the biggest challenges facing society.
