Volunteer

Cambridge Science Festival relies on the support of our volunteers, without them we wouldn't be able to run such a large and varied programme of events

Volunteering for our Cambridge Festivals provides you with the opportunity to meet some extraordinary people and to develop new skills, while gaining a unique insight into one of the most globally renowned universities. The ideas and research that come from Cambridge help to save lives and change the way we think about the world – almost every day.

Thousands of people visit the Cambridge Festivals each year - exploring the wonderful research taking place here in Cambridge. We simply could not put on events of this scale without the help of hundreds of volunteers who donate their time, energy and expertise to the Festivals. If you would like to volunteer as a steward and be part of this great event, please get in touch and request a volunteer expression of interest form

How much time should you offer? When would you be needed? Where will you be based?

  • We have events on everyday of the Festival. Most weekday volunteering opportunities are in the evening and weekend volunteering opportunies are during the day.
  • Please note our expectation is that you would be able to volunteer for a whole day during the weekend.
  • The role is based in University of Cambridge venues and those of our partner organisations. All venues are in and around Cambridge and are accessible by public transport.

What activities will you be involved in?

  • Assisting the public with entering the Festival site and venues (including on-site direction, door and ticketing duties, managing queues)
  • Speaking and listening to the public and assisting with their questions
  • Supporting Question and Answers sessions by facilitating a microphone in the audience.
  • Supporting University members of staff to engage with venue staff and event speakers.
  • Doing helpful practical things at the venue, if needed, such as setting up Festival banners, brochures and leaflets.
  • Carrying out evaluation activities (such as questionnaires) with visitors.

What can you gain from this opportunity?

  • The chance to play an important role in sharing the latest research with the public.
  • Access to high profile, stimulating science, arts and humanities events
  • Making a difference to those who need support to attend events

Is there an induction and training? Is there a Uniform?

  • You will receive an induction, including a health and safety briefing, when you start.
  • We provide a Festival Volunteer T Shirt to all volunteers.

Who do I report to?

  • A University member of staff will be the event coordinator at each event. They will give you clear information as to what you are required to do. They will also provide you with a venue health and safety briefing. You report to them and you can ask them any questions that you have.

What are we looking for?

  • A friendly approach with good listening skills
  • An interest in other people’s lives and an empathetic nature
  • The ability to keep within boundaries of the role
  • To be an ambassador for the University
  • The ability to travel within Cambridge by public transport, on foot or by cycle.
