Geysers to Grooves: The Symphony of Yellowstone’s Seismic Secrets

4:00pm-5:30pm on Tuesday 26 March

Times shown are in GMT (UTC +0) up to the 26th March. For events on or after 27th March times are in BST (UTC +1).

Anglia Ruskin University, East Road, CB1 1PT

Dr Domenico Vicinanza, a pioneering expert in data sonification from Anglia Ruskin University, will take you on an auditory journey through the seismic wonders of Yellowstone National Park and, in conversation with Earth scientist Dr Carrie Soderman from the University of Cambridge, will discuss new ways of understanding the planet.

Dr Vicinanza will harness real-time seismographic data collected from the geysers and seismic activity of Yellowstone National Park, one of the most seismically active areas in the United States. Using a combination of data science, computer algorithms and music scoring, Dr Vicinanza will translate these geophysical measurements into a live musical performance, offering a unique blend of science and music.

What makes this performance truly captivating is the element of unpredictability. Yellowstone’s seismic activity is erratic and volatile, with earthquakes often occurring in ‘swarms’, creating a musical composition that cannot be foreseen.
