Am I Normal? and Dreamy Cops are two art installations that investigate notions of AI, including computer vision, surveillance, the human body and normativity.
The first, Am I Normal?, is an interactive installation reflecting on body control in public spaces through computer vision technologies.
The second, Dreamy Cops, reflects on the similarities between synthesis and analysis in AI, and on the impact of university research in the development of surveillance technologies (you can see a short demo of it at: https://computervisionart.com/pieces2021/dreamy-cops/).
For the Cambridge Festival, the artwork will be modified to project dozens of small, generated videos of pedestrians onto a large grid, creating a control-room-like screen.
The installation questions the notion of image itself: what is an image when it is never perceived by a human being (as is the case for a lot of CCTV cameras images) – when it is pure digital data that’s only treated by neural networks? Could these networks create their own world, composed of their own private digital images, far from any human eye?
The artist, Tristan Dot, is a PhD student in digital art history at Cambridge Digital Humanities.
